HOPA 55+ Act

The HOPA 55+ Act, an amendment to the Fair Housing Act, was passed in 2013. Essentially, it allowed developers of 55+ Communities to build homes that are age-restricted, but don’t have to offer “significant facilities and services” designed for older individuals.

Which doesn’t mean those services aren’t readily available.

Putting the Focus into Community Features.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development permitted the development of senior living residences for 55+ communities to put their resources and focus into features for active adults, instead of on-site services for older, less active people.

This benefits the residents of the Cottages of Burnett Trail 55+ community, by offering a lot of amenities and services you might find in conventional condominium or apartments, without the need for more expensive healthcare services.

The law allows 55+ communities, like ours, to follow the 80/20 rule. That means 80% of the homes have to be occupied by someone who’s 55 years old (or older). This is standard in 55+ senior living communities anywhere, with the occasional exception.
